ITC is overseeing the first pilot operation of autonomous trucks in Abu Dhabi.
ABU DHABI, February 27, 2026 (WAM) -- The Integrated Transport Center (ITC) under the Department of Municipalities and Transport has announced the supervision of a pilot project for the operation of autonomous trucks in Abu Dhabi, in collaboration with global company Autotech, which develops autonomous vehicle systems, and AD Ports Group. The project is being implemented within the Khalifa Economic Zones Abu Dhabi - KEZAD. This initiative marks a first for the operation of autonomous trucks for logistics and freight transport purposes in the Middle East and North Africa, reflecting the expansion of autonomous system applications across various modes of transport. ITC stated that the project focuses on assessing the operation of autonomous trucks in a specific industrial and logistics environment. Pilot trips were conducted along designated routes within KEZAD in accordance with approved regulatory frameworks and operational standards. Throughout 2025, the developer worked under the supervision of ITC to adapt artificial intelligence-based autonomous driving systems to local road requirements and logistics transport needs, ensuring safe and seamless operations in compliance with the highest safety and operational efficiency standards. Additionally, it evaluated whether the technology is ready for real-world application. This project is part of ITC's efforts to support a smart and autonomous mobility ecosystem in the emirate and enhances the readiness of regulatory frameworks to adopt innovative solutions serving the supply chain and logistics sector. It contributes to improving freight transport efficiency and enhancing operational performance across economic and industrial zones, while preparing for the commercial rollout of autonomous logistics services. ITC Acting Director General Dr. Abdulla Hamad AlGhfeli stated, “These initiatives contribute to increasing the efficiency of the transport ecosystem, supporting the competitiveness of economic sectors, and strengthening Abu Dhabi's position as a leading regional hub for the adoption of smart mobility solutions and autonomous systems; this is in line with the UAE National Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2031.”
