Guests Leaving Dubai Abandon Their Pets on the Streets
Following the attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran, security concerns have increased in the region as Iran targeted locations in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Many individuals attempting to leave Dubai have abandoned their pets, leading to shelters being filled with abandoned cats and dogs.
The effects of the conflict in the Middle East are also being felt in the UAE. In retaliation for the US and Israeli attacks, Iran struck certain targets in the UAE, prompting a significant number of expatriates in Dubai to seek to leave the country.
However, veterinarians and animal rescue volunteers report a rapid increase in cases of pets being abandoned in the city.
Shelters Overwhelmed
Veterinary clinics and animal rescue groups operating in Dubai have noted a significant rise in the number of cats and dogs left on the streets in recent days. Some pet owners are reportedly leaving their animals behind because they cannot take them when departing the country, while others are asking veterinarians to euthanize their healthy pets.
K9 Friends Dubai, an organization involved in dog adoption efforts in the city, announced on its social media accounts that it is "overwhelmed with calls from owners wishing to abandon their pets or reports of abandoned puppies."
Aditi Gouri, who runs a pet boarding facility in the city, also stated that shelters are at capacity. Gouri remarked, "The shelters are currently overcrowded and doing their best. We are trying to be flexible during these difficult times because we understand that people are in a state of panic."
Hundreds of Animals Abandoned
Volunteers working at animal rescue centers report receiving hundreds more reports of abandoned animals compared to normal times. This situation is beginning to strain the capacity of the shelters.
