Ajman Department of Tourism, Culture and Media hosts 6th Ajman International Coin and Stamp Exhibition

AJMAN, 2nd September, 2026 (WAM) -- Ajman is welcoming hundreds of specialists, enthusiasts and collectors from around the world for the sixth edition of the Ajman International Coin and Stamp Exhibition, organised by the Ajman Department of Tourism, Culture and Media from 2nd to 6th September at Bahi Ajman Palace Hotel. The strong international participation reflects the emirate’s growing position as a destination for specialised cultural and heritage events.This year’s exhibition brings together around 85 specialised shops and 300 exhibitors representing 50 nationalities, alongside more than 50,000 coins, stamps and collectables with a combined face value exceeding AED5 million. Dubai Culture launches open call for participation in Arabic Typography Programme

DUBAI, 2nd September, 2026 (WAM) -- Dubai Culture has launched an open call for participation in the Arabic Typography Programme, organised in partnership with Visual Synonyms. The programme aims to open new creative horizons for talented practitioners in contemporary design, enabling them to explore the artistic potential of Arabic letterforms and reinterpret them through an educational experience that combines academic knowledge with practical application.Led by Dr Antoine Abi Aad, Associate Professor at the College of Arts and Creative Enterprises at Zayed University, the programme is aimed at working professionals with between three and ten years of experience, a solid working knowledge of Adobe Illustrator, and an ambition to advance their practice in Arabic typography.Applications will be open from 31 August to 20 September, and a committee comprising experts and artists will review them and select participants who meet the programme’s requirements. Applicants are required to submit their resumes with their applications, along with a creative portfolio of their key artworks and completed design projects. They must also commit to attending all programme sessions, which will take place for one month starting mid-October.The programme will feature a series of specialised masterclasses, mentorship sessions, interactive workshops and practical assignments, delivered either over two consecutive weeks or across five weekends. Participants will embark on a process of research and experimentation that begins with analysing the visual language of Japanese identity marks and culminates in the creation of contemporary typographic works rooted in Arabic letterforms and reimagined through modern design approaches.

Sheikh Sultan Award for Celebrating the Spirit of Youth opens registration for 7th cycle

SHARJAH, 2nd September, 2026 (WAM) -- Sheikh Sultan Award for Celebrating the Spirit of Youth, under the umbrella of the Rubu’ Qarn Foundation for Creating Future Leaders and Innovators, has officially launched its seventh cycle, continuing its mission to help youth discover their potential and develop their capabilities through meaningful experiences beyond the academic setting. Registration opened on 1 September to youth aged 13 to 18, including UAE citizens and residents of all nationalities, and will close on 1 May 2027.Sheikh Sultan Award for Celebrating the Spirit of Youth is the first of its kind in the region and aims to encourage youth to develop their skills and broaden their experiences across four categories: Adventure, Volunteering, Skills, and Fitness & Wellbeing. Inaugural Arabian Saluki Championship to take place in Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI, 1st September, 2026 (WAM) -- Under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Ruler’s Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the Emirates Falconers’ Club, and H.H. Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Ruler’s Representative in Al Ain Region, the Emirates Falconers’ Club and the Arabian Saluki Centre in Abu Dhabi have launched the Arabian Saluki Championship for the 2026–2027 sporting season.The championship’s rounds will be held in Al Dhafra and Al Ain, marking a significant step that reflects the UAE’s growing interest in reviving heritage sports and promoting Arabian Saluki Racing within an integrated system that meets the highest technical and organisational standards.The championship is aligned with the club’s vision of safeguarding intangible cultural heritage and preserving hunting with the Arabian Saluki as an integral part of the UAE’s cultural heritage, while working to pass on its knowledge and values to younger generations. It also seeks to develop the sport by establishing a professional competition system that keeps pace with the top international championships, as well as enhancing training and performance assessment standards in a manner that contributes to raising technical levels.The inaugural edition of the championship will commence on 7th November 2026 in Al Ain, followed by a round in Al Dhafra on 14th November, featuring several rounds, including qualifying and semi-final races for speed categories over a distance of 1,000 metres, middle-distance races over 1,500 metres, and Endurance Races over 2,000 metres, for both male and female categories.The championship adopts a professional points and ranking system, enabling the identification of the top-performing Salukis and best participating breeders. The championship will conclude with the final rounds for these categories on 27 February, 6 and 20 March 2027.The Emirates Falconers’ Club has allocated valuable prizes for the winners, reflecting the importance placed on encouraging competition and promoting this heritage sport. The championship will also award seasonal titles, including sprint champion, distance champion, endurance champion, Arabian Saluki champion, and best breeder, contributing to a higher level of competition and encouraging owners and breeders to develop their bloodlines while preserving their authenticity.Alongside the races, the championship features a comprehensive programme of accompanying activities, including the Arabian Saluki beauty contest (Al Mazayen) and a simulated hunting competition using a mechanical lure.These competitions are held as part of the UAE’s major cultural and heritage events, including the Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition, Al Dhafra Festival, Al Ain Heritage Festival, and the Sheikh Zayed Festival in Al Wathba, Abu Dhabi. Sharjah Ruler orders free education for Sudanese students

SHARJAH, 1st September, 2026 (WAM) -- His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has directed the Sharjah Private Education Authority (SPEA) not to collect any fees from Sudanese pupils at Sudan Private School and to refund every nominal fee already taken from parents.His Highness said he had established the school for members of Sharjah's Sudanese community who could not afford to enrol their children elsewhere in the emirate, intending it to be entirely free of charge, and that he follows the school's affairs directly and continuously.He also urged Sharjah government employees to complete their higher studies, announcing the start of the first cohort of the "Tumouh" (Aspiration) programme, in which 60 male and female staff are enrolled for a postgraduate diploma that will allow them to go on to a master's degree at the University of Exeter in the UK."Give back what you've taken from those in need."Speaking in a phone-in on the "Direct Line" programme, hosted by Mohammed Hassan Khalaf, Director-General of the Sharjah Broadcasting Authority, His Highness explained the school's origins, "We set up Sudan Private School because we found some Sudanese parents didn't have the means to enrol their children in schools, so we opened a private school for them and took on the running of the teachers and everything to do with the school without charging parents anything. It appears that the Sharjah Private Education Authority put some fees in place and called them 'nominal', but a nominal fee is a lot for someone in need, so we've instructed the Authority not to take any fees at all, large or small, from these pupils."He added, "We are in constant contact with those running the school, and we follow every detail. When a teacher hits a pupil, we end his employment immediately. When we find a teacher who isn't up to the job, we train and develop him and give him everything he needs to teach effectively — and if he does not improve, we remove him from the school. And we say, from the platform of 'Direct Line', Sharjah Private Education Authority, give back the money you've taken from people in need."His comments came in response to a message sent to the programme by the parent of Sudanese pupils, who wrote: "We, the children of the Sudanese community in Sharjah, were granted a school as an honour from His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah. After a full year of study, we were asked for high tuition fees and did not receive certificates unless we paid the outstanding fees along with this year's fees, even though the school was supposed to be entirely free as an honour from His Highness."His Highness also offered guidance to Sharjah government employees hoping to pursue postgraduate qualifications, recalling a talk he once gave to a room full of prospective students: "When postgraduate programmes launched in Sharjah, I gave a short address to students wanting to enrol. When I walked into the hall, I found it packed, and their questions were numerous, scattered and disconnected. I told them I'd come to share some advice from my own experience of postgraduate study — chief among it, postgraduate study has to be in a specialism that benefits people, society, and knowledge itself. I advise the postgraduate student to focus on their studies, to clear their mind for it and give it their full attention rather than treating it as a side pursuit. Building knowledge in a person's mind is like construction: it starts in nursery, then kindergarten, then school, then university, and so on — each a sequential, connected stage in laying the scientific foundations of the mind. If a single brick falls from that structure, the whole thing collapses."He continued, "So I say to our fellow students: I will not award a doctorate to someone who studies it half-heartedly, because tomorrow they'll be teaching young people and students, some of whom will go on to postgraduate study themselves. If a doctor teaches students material they haven't mastered, that's an academic disaster. So to postgraduate students, I say: please give knowledge its due. Seek out learning, gather information, and sail with us on the ship of knowledge and understanding. And to teachers, university heads and our educational institutions, I say: be kind to those who seek knowledge."He added that the Tumouh (Aspiration) programme, open to any government employee in the emirate wanting to develop themselves professionally, is a one-year postgraduate diploma, after which staff can go on to complete a master's degree at the University of Exeter with a further year of study. "Thankfully, the first cohort began their studies this year — 60 employees from various government departments in the emirate. I say to our people: please, work hard, and know that I am following your work, your contribution, and everything you bring to your roles."Turning to a different subject, His Highness shared an observation on the natural world, discussing the intelligence of crows and the origins of the Arabic word for the bird, "ghurab". He explained that crows come in many forms — some as large as eagles; some with white-flecked knees, like the Indian crow; and the Arabian crow, with its striking, glossy black plumage, which is attacked by outside crows because of its smaller size. Though native to the local environment, he said, its numbers have dwindled, prompting efforts to breed more of them—though they cannot yet be released, since they would be unable to compete with the far larger population of other crows.He traced the origin of the name to Medina, where the bird once fed on the city's dates through the summer before turning on chickens once the season ended, prompting locals to drive it off towards the coastal town of Rabigh, west of the city – a town His Highness recalled visiting in 1954 while travelling to perform Hajj, where most residents fished for a living. He described how certain fish species, thin-skinned and unable to withstand water pressure despite their size, stay near the surface after the summer season, unlike the thick-skinned grouper (groupers), which can dive into deeper waters.He went on to describe an old fishing method still used in Rabigh, known as "Al-daghwa", a net-based technique used to catch these surface-dwelling fish, which are then laid out to dry on the shore – the origin, he said, of the local expression telling a crow to "head west" in search of food. He also noted a trick some people use to drive crows away: hanging a dead crow from a tree, so the rest of the flock believes the tree itself caused its death and avoids the area."Intelligent creatures, but their intelligence can do harm"His Highness described crows as highly intelligent creatures with distinctive behaviour, recounting an incident at his own home: "I have small birds at home, and I was watching them when a crow suddenly swooped down and caught one in its beak. It couldn't injure the bird, since its beak is straight rather than pointed, so it carried the screeching bird to the fountain and tried to drown it. I've often seen them gather in groups, with one standing in the centre, as though they were plotting something. And as we've seen in a widely shared video, a crow found a half-empty water bottle and dropped small stones into it to raise the water level so it could drink. They're remarkably intelligent creatures – but sadly, that intelligence sometimes does harm to other creatures."His Highness closed his remarks with a call to good character and rising above grudges, citing lines from one of the great works of classical Arabic poetry on dignity, generosity, and forgiving the wrongs of relatives, by the Umayyad-era poet Al-Muqanna' Al-Kindi.

Chairman of Bahrain Shura Council reaffirms full solidarity with UAE, condemns Iranian attack

ABU DHABI, 1st September, 2026 (WAM) -- Saqr Ghobash, Speaker of the Federal National Council (FNC), received a message of solidarity from Ali bin Saleh Al Saleh, Chairman of the Shura Council of the Kingdom of Bahrain, in which he expressed the Kingdom's strong condemnation and denunciation of the renewed Iranian attacks targeting the UAE with a drone.Al Saleh said the attacks constitute a flagrant violation of the sovereignty of the United Arab Emirates and a dangerous escalation that threatens regional security and stability, while violating international law, the Charter of the United Nations, UN Security Council Resolution 2817 and the principles of good neighbourliness.The Bahraini Shura Council Chairman expressed Bahrain's full solidarity with and support for the UAE, backing all measures it takes to safeguard its security, sovereignty and territorial integrity and to protect its citizens and residents.He stressed that the UAE's security and stability are an integral part of the security and stability of the Kingdom of Bahrain and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries.Al Saleh also praised the efficiency and vigilance of the UAE Armed Forces and air defence systems, as well as their efforts in intercepting the drone.He stressed the importance of the UN Security Council fulfilling its responsibilities and taking the necessary measures to compel Iran to comply with international law and the UN Charter, and to completely halt its attacks and aggressive actions that threaten the region's security and stability.He said such measures would contribute to de-escalation and the preservation of regional security and stability.

ABU DHABI, 1st September, 2026 (WAM) -- The UN Peacekeeping Chiefs Workshop has opened in Abu Dhabi, hosted by the UAE Ministry of Interior from 31st August to 4th September, 2026, with participants from 23 countries.The workshop brings together police chiefs and military components of UN peacekeeping missions worldwide, alongside representatives of the United Nations and the Ministry of Interior.Held as part of ongoing cooperation between the UAE and the UN, the workshop reflects the country's commitment to supporting international initiatives aimed at enhancing the performance of peacekeeping operations and strengthening their ability to respond to security and humanitarian challenges.Discussions cover challenges facing UN Police, outcomes of the UN Chiefs of Police Summit, peacekeeping performance, knowledge management and guidance, permanent police capabilities, operational challenges, and responsive and gender-sensitive policing.The workshop also enables police component chiefs from various UN missions to exchange experiences and addresses performance assessment standards for police units and individual officers, emergency planning, reporting, budgeting and ammunition management.Further discussions focus on strengthening coordination between the police and military components of peacekeeping operations.Colonel Saeed Al Dhaheri, Police Attaché at the UAE Permanent Mission to the UN in New York, welcomed participants and highlighted the workshop's role in strengthening cooperation between the UAE and the UN and supporting international peace and security.Al Dhaheri said the UAE's hosting of the workshop reflects its firm commitment to supporting UN peacekeeping efforts and provides an important platform for exchanging expertise and best practices, developing performance assessment frameworks, and improving the efficiency and effectiveness of peacekeeping operations.He added that the participation of military leaders alongside police chiefs represents an important step towards closer coordination between the two components, reflecting the shared belief that sustainable peace requires genuine cooperation among all those involved in peacekeeping operations.Lieutenant General Faisal, UN Police Adviser, said the UAE's hosting of the workshop reflects its unwavering commitment to supporting the UN system and expanding its contribution to peace operations.He said the current phase requires the continuous development of policing and security methods and a shift towards more flexible and innovative models drawing on technology and data, while being based on efficiency, preparedness and rapid response.He added that building qualified police capabilities able to operate in complex environments, alongside closer police-military coordination, is fundamental to improving the effectiveness of peace operations and achieving lasting impact on the ground.Lieutenant General Faisal said stronger performance depends on effective leadership, coordination among different components, and the ability to adapt to rapidly changing conflict environments.He stressed that aligning priorities and strengthening police-military coordination are crucial to enabling UN missions to fulfil their mandates, protect civilians, and support stability and the rule of law in host countries.Lieutenant General Cheryl Pearce, Acting Military Adviser to the United Nations, said peacekeeping operations are taking place in an increasingly complex geopolitical and operational environment, marked by more complicated conflicts, transnational threats, the proliferation of drones, and growing information and technology challenges.She said the future of peacekeeping requires missions to become more adaptable, mobile and responsive, with technology used to improve situational awareness, support decision-making and enhance operational effectiveness while preserving the fundamentally political nature of peacekeeping operations.Pearce added that developing peacekeeping missions requires identifying their most important tasks, providing the capabilities needed to carry them out, and improving coordination among the various entities and teams involved.She stressed that the safety and security of peacekeepers must remain a primary consideration in mission planning and implementation, supported by appropriate training and capabilities, stronger situational awareness, rapid medical support when required, and lessons learned from previous incidents.

Emirates Red Crescent launches 2026-2029 strategy to boost sustainability, innovation in humanitarian work

ABU DHABI, 1st September, 2026 (WAM) -- The Emirates Red Crescent (ERC) has launched its new 2026-2029 strategy as part of efforts to further develop institutional work mechanisms, keep pace with rapid changes and growing challenges in humanitarian action, enhance preparedness, proactivity and response speed, and advance its vision as a leading aid provider and global model for humanitarian and community work.The strategy aims to improve performance efficiency, expand humanitarian and community impact and strengthen the sustainability of programmes and initiatives, based on four core values: humanity, sustainability, innovation and transparency.The new strategy is built around four main pillars. The first, financial sustainability, focuses on enhancing the efficiency of marketing activities, optimising resource investment and improving customer experience.The second pillar, sustainability of community and volunteer impact, seeks to meet humanitarian needs efficiently and effectively, promote active community participation and strengthen volunteers' capabilities.The third pillar, efficiency of relief operations and assistance, includes effective response to humanitarian and relief appeals, efficient project management and the provision of integrated, high-quality services.The fourth pillar focuses on providing effective institutional services to ensure continuity of business support and improve the efficiency of support services.Ahmed Sari Al Mazrouei, Secretary-General of the ERC, said during the strategy's launch ceremony that the new four-year plan marks a new phase in the organisation's humanitarian and institutional journey and sets its direction for the coming period in a way that strengthens its ability to achieve its vision, mission and objectives efficiently and effectively while expanding its humanitarian and community impact.He said achieving the new strategy's objectives requires key enablers to keep pace with developments and activate mechanisms suited to the nature of the ERC's work, which demands rapid and proactive intervention in emergencies and crises, immediate response to humanitarian appeals from different regions, countries and regional and international humanitarian organisations, and continuous communication with people in need of support and assistance.Al Mazrouei said these enablers include policies and governance, efficient digital and technological solutions, partnerships and agreements, and human resources.He added that the strategy draws its direction from the UAE's vision and its longstanding approach to giving and humanitarian action.The ERC, he said, seeks to strengthen its position as a leading humanitarian donor and contribute to consolidating the UAE's standing as a global model for humanitarian and development work.He added that the coming phase will focus on innovation, efficiency, sustainability and impact measurement across programmes and initiatives, while implementation will draw on the ERC's accumulated experience, partnerships, employees and volunteers, as well as the trust of philanthropists and donors.Al Mazrouei said the ultimate objective of the strategy is to achieve a qualitative shift in the quality of humanitarian services and programmes and deliver more effective and sustainable humanitarian impact."Our 2026-2029 strategy is not merely an action plan, but a roadmap to strengthen Emirates Red Crescent initiatives, enhance its readiness and ensure the sustainability of its humanitarian mission in the next phase," he said.Al Mazrouei added that the ERC draws determination from its humanitarian legacy to continue its humanitarian and development journey and further strengthen the UAE's position as a global model in humanitarian work.He said the organisation would maximise its available advantages and leverage its strengths to achieve greater excellence, bring about a qualitative shift in programmes and initiatives, and preserve the achievements made throughout its journey, supported by the UAE leadership and the strong backing of philanthropists and benefactors.He expressed hope that the strategy would mark a new phase of giving and provide a means to reach more effective and sustainable solutions in the ERC's field of work through the use of innovation and modern technologies in developing programmes and initiatives implemented inside and outside the UAE.
