Dubai schools maintain zero traffic fatalities since 2010

DUBAI, 1st September, 2026 (WAM) -- Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched a series of awareness programmes and activities for students, parents and drivers coinciding with the start of the 2026–2027 academic year.The initiatives are part of RTA’s annual traffic awareness plan, aimed at promoting safe road behaviour, raising awareness of the causes of traffic accidents in school zones and reinforcing traffic safety principles. They also align with the nationwide "Traffic Safety for School Students" campaign led by the Ministry of Interior.RTA urged parents and drivers to exercise caution around schools, adhere to speed limits, avoid improper and double parking and unsafe overtaking, and use designated areas for dropping off and picking up students.It also called for greater vigilance at pedestrian crossings and around school buses, particularly during the first weeks of the academic year, when traffic volumes around schools typically increase.Hussain Al Banna, CEO of RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency, said, "School students are among the key target groups in RTA’s traffic awareness plans, particularly given the growing number of students in Dubai. We therefore seek to instil a culture of safety from the early school years, with awareness messages and programmes tailored to students’ age and educational level."Al Banna said RTA’s awareness plans are based on traffic statistics and surveys. During the 2025–2026 academic year, RTA surveyed more than 20,000 parents, with 91 percent saying they used designated student drop-off and pick-up areas in school zones and 71 percent reporting full awareness of the related rules.The survey found that 44 percent of students travel by school bus and around 47 percent by private vehicle, while the remainder walk, use public transport, or rely on individual and shared mobility options.Al Banna said RTA’s awareness and engineering measures, implemented in cooperation with government and private-sector partners, have helped maintain zero traffic fatalities at Dubai schools since 2010.He stressed the role of families in promoting safe road behaviour by complying with traffic rules, wearing seat belts, respecting pedestrian crossings and speed limits, and avoiding mobile phone use while driving.He said, "A student’s safety on the daily journey to and from school is a shared responsibility that begins at home and extends to the road, the school bus and the area surrounding the school."Al Banna urged parents to plan school journeys in advance, allow sufficient travel time and avoid dropping students off in the middle of the road or at undesignated locations. He also warned against double parking outside schools, which can disrupt traffic flow, obstruct visibility and endanger children.Drivers were urged to reduce speed in school zones, remain prepared to stop at pedestrian crossings, watch for children emerging between parked vehicles and avoid mobile phones and other distractions.With the start of the new academic year, RTA will resume programmes tailored to different educational levels, including "Hello, My School" for kindergarten and primary school students, "Golden Rules for Generations’ Safety", and "Virtual Driving Licence" for secondary-school students.RTA will also participate in school events and deliver awareness activities in cooperation with schools and partners.The programmes use interactive approaches to teach students safe road crossing, proper use of pedestrian crossings and seat belts, safe behaviour when boarding and leaving vehicles and school buses, and the importance of avoiding danger zones around buses and vehicles.RTA is also continuing traffic and engineering improvements around schools, including upgrades to entry and exit points, pedestrian crossings, traffic-calming measures, road signs and markings.It is also expanding the use of digital and interactive awareness tools, including educational materials and giveaways featuring QR codes and digital links to visual content and road safety messages.

Dubai Police’s Hemaya Schools begin new academic year across five campuses

ADCMC strengthens Alternative Service Programme to support vital sectors

Ministry of Interior launches school road safety campaign

ABU DHABI, 1st September, 2026 (WAM) -- The Ministry of Interior, through the Federal Traffic Council, has launched its fourth quarterly campaign of 2026 under the slogan “Safe Road for Our Students” to promote road safety during students’ journeys to and from school.Targeting students, parents, school bus drivers and supervisors, the campaign provides guidance on safe behaviour aboard school buses, boarding and disembarking procedures, and precautions around schools and residential areas.Campaign materials are available in Arabic, English, and Urdu. Its messages will also be shared across Facebook, X, and Instagram as part of a coordinated media plan developed with strategic partners and relevant traffic safety authorities.Students are advised to arrive at bus stops five minutes before the scheduled pickup time, remain calm during the journey and avoid distracting the driver. After leaving the bus, they should move at least 10 steps away to remain visible to the driver.Supervisors are responsible for assisting students when boarding and leaving buses, recording absences, notifying school authorities and monitoring behaviour during journeys.Parents are encouraged to accompany children to bus stops and arrange for an authorised person to receive them from the bus or at the school gate, while schools are urged to provide safe boarding and disembarking areas and maintain regular communication with parents.School bus drivers must inspect their vehicles daily, stop only in safe locations and remain stationary until students have finished boarding or disembarking. They must also ensure, in coordination with supervisors, that students are seated and wearing seat belts and activate the “Stop” sign when students are boarding or leaving the bus.Motorists travelling in both directions must come to a complete stop when a school bus “Stop” sign is activated.Under Article 91, motorists who fail to stop face a fine of AED1,000 and 10 traffic points, while Article 90 imposes a fine of AED500 and six traffic points on school bus drivers who fail to activate the sign.

MoI, MBRSG roll out 3rd edition of Executive Programme for Innovation Leaders

Spanning six months and totaling 205 training hours, it follows an integrated learning model that combines in-person and virtual instruction, practical training, and the implementation of applied innovation projects. It also features field visits to relevant entities and institutions, enabling participants to explore leading practices and experiences firsthand.The programme is structured around four key learning phases. It begins by establishing and developing an innovative mindset, followed by mastering the necessary tools and techniques, applying them in a government context, and concluding with future foresight and its practical applications. Through these phases, participants will strengthen their knowledge and capabilities in designing and implementing innovative workplace solutions.The launch of the third edition forms part of a broader series of initiatives aimed at fostering innovators across the Ministry of Interior. UAEU opens Medical Simulation Centre to advance medical education, clinical training

AL AIN, 31st August, 2026 (WAM) -- Zaki Anwar Nusseibeh, Cultural Adviser to His Highness the President of the UAE and Chancellor of the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU), officially opened the UAEU Medical Simulation Centre, in the presence of Prof. Ahmed Ali Alraeesi, Vice Chancellor of UAEU, and members of the University’s senior leadership.The opening marks a significant step in advancing medical education and clinical training at UAEU and strengthening the integration of advanced technologies into the preparation of future healthcare professionals.The UAEU Medical Simulation Center provides an integrated educational and training environment designed to deliver safe, immersive, and technology-enabled clinical experiences. It allows students and trainees to practise clinical skills and manage realistic scenarios without placing patients at risk, while strengthening clinical competence, teamwork, communication, clinical decision-making, and patient safety.Occupying approximately 4,000 square metres across two floors, the centre features five dedicated simulation suites covering major clinical specialties: the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Emergency Department (ED), Obstetrics & Gynecology, Operating Room (OR), and Pediatrics. It also includes an immersive simulation room, a Virtual Reality (VR) room, 24 OSCE examination rooms, eight debriefing rooms, four lecture rooms, three multipurpose rooms, a Master Control Room, and Standardized Patient (SP) facilities.The centre is equipped with high-fidelity patient simulators, audiovisual recording and observation systems, simulation control technologies, virtual reality technologies, and specialized equipment designed to support realistic clinical environments and structured debriefing.Approximately 700 undergraduate medical students across Years 1–6 are among the centre’s key student beneficiaries. Since the beginning of 2026, the center has supported more than 250 educational activities, reaching approximately 9,000 learners and generating more than 22,000 learner contact hours, demonstrating its substantial educational capacity and reach.The center supports a broad range of education and training activities, including clinical skills education, simulation-based learning, OSCEs and clinical assessments, acute care simulation, capstone and advanced clinical training activities, Standardized Patient-based education, simulation instructor development, professional development and healthcare training, specialized workshops and training programs, as well as educational research and simulation innovation.Through its controlled simulation environment, learners are able to repeatedly practice clinical skills, manage complex and high-risk situations, communicate effectively, and work within multidisciplinary teams. Simulation also enables learners to learn from errors and receive structured feedback without placing real patients at risk, directly contributing to the development of clinical competence and enhanced patient safety.The centre also provides infrastructure for educational research in simulation effectiveness, assessment, standardized patients, immersive learning, and other innovations in healthcare education.The UAEU Medical Simulation Centre is currently progressing through the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) accreditation process, with the formal review and site visit scheduled for October 2026.The centre is also developing collaborations and partnerships with healthcare and academic organisations to expand simulation-based education, professional development, research, and external training opportunities.The centre reflects UAEU’s continued commitment to modernising healthcare education through an integrated environment that brings together education, training, assessment, research, and innovation. By combining high-fidelity clinical simulation with immersive and virtual reality technologies, it supports the preparation of highly competent healthcare professionals equipped to meet the evolving demands of clinical practice and the healthcare sector.

Child Safety calls for unified family, school efforts

SHARJAH, 31st August, 2026 (WAM) -- As students return to school, the Child Safety Organisation has called for families and schools to work together to strengthen six key pillars that support children’s safety and wellbeing throughout the 2026–2027 academic year: safe journeys between home and school; health readiness; responsible, family-supervised digital use; promoting respectful behaviour; open family dialogue; and sustained communication between parents and teachers.The organisation stressed that returning to school is an important transition in a child’s life. It begins when they leave home and get into a vehicle, and continues until they arrive safely at school. Alongside adhering to safety measures during daily journeys, children need support to rebuild their routines and prepare emotionally and socially for a new year of learning, experiences and relationships. This period is also an opportunity for families and schools to renew the circle of care around every child and create an environment that fosters safety, confidence and belonging.Hanadi Saleh Al Yafei, Director General of the Child Safety Organisation, said, “The school year succeeds when a child is surrounded by one network of trust: a family that listens, a school that notices and embraces them, and a digital space guided by knowledge and responsibility. Then, children feel that their voices are heard, that asking for support is their right, and that respect for themselves and others is part of their daily lives.”She added, “This is the culture we want to accompany our children throughout the year: one that gives them the reassurance they need to learn, the ability to build healthy relationships, and the confidence to face challenges. The more consistent the messages children receive at home, at school and in the digital world, the more aware their choices become and the more stable and positive their school experience will be.”The organisation highlighted health and wellbeing as key priorities as students settle into the new school year, given the strong connection between regular sleep, balanced nutrition, physical activity and adequate water intake, and a child’s ability to concentrate, regulate emotions and engage positively throughout the school day.According to established health recommendations, children aged 6 to 12 need between 9 and 12 hours of sleep each day, while adolescents aged 13 to 18 need between 8 and 10 hours. The World Health Organisation also recommends that children and adolescents aged 5 to 17 undertake an average of 60 minutes a day of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity.The organisation noted that maintaining consistent and healthy routines during the first weeks of the school year can help children adjust to their daily academic schedules and manage the demands of the school day more effectively. Balanced daily habits remain essential to supporting their physical and mental wellbeing, as well as their concentration, energy levels and readiness to learn.The Child Safety Organisation stressed that digital use has become an integral part of children’s educational and social experiences, making informed family supervision an ongoing necessity that takes account of a child’s age, maturity and the nature of the digital spaces they use.It noted that digital safety is strengthened through dialogue and clear family agreements on practices that protect privacy and regulate the use of devices and platforms. This helps children develop awareness of how to engage with content and digital communication, and encourages them to turn to a trusted person when they encounter an experience that concerns them or goes beyond safe boundaries.The organisation emphasised that balanced supervision preserves channels of trust with children while combining protection with the opportunity to develop digital responsibility. This helps them use technology positively and safely for learning, communication and entertainment.It also said that preventing school bullying begins with creating a learning environment built on respect and acceptance of differences, where every child feels valued, included and confident in expressing themselves. Sharjah Police strengthen security for new academic year

SHARJAH, 31st August, 2026 (WAM) -- Sharjah Police welcomed the 2026-2027 academic year with a comprehensive security and traffic system. This included increased deployment and monitoring around schools, activation of a mobile operations room to monitor traffic flow, and enhanced public awareness and communication services, all aimed at supporting student safety and smooth traffic flow.The Sharjah Police General Command intensified its field efforts on the first day of the 2026-2027 academic year through a comprehensive system of security, traffic, media, and community plans.It utilised its resources and field teams to enhance road safety, ensure smooth traffic flow, and raise awareness and security culture among community members.The security efforts extended to Sharjah city and the Central and Eastern regions, through increased deployment and traffic monitoring around schools and the activation of a mobile operations room to monitor traffic conditions during peak hours. This contributes to rapid response and maintains the safety of students and road users.Sharjah Police, through its 901 call centre, has dedicated a direct service to receive security and traffic-related comments and inquiries concerning schools, ensuring swift action and fostering direct communication with community members.Awareness and school programmesOn the awareness front, the police conducted various visits and programmes within schools to reinforce traffic safety concepts and community awareness. This was done in conjunction with activating the "Ma'man" platform in cooperation with the Sharjah Private Education Authority to monitor reports related to students and school buses.A media plan was also implemented, including visual content, designs, and awareness messages targeting different age groups.

Arab Information Ministers to convene in Dubai for Arab Media Summit 2026

DUBAI, 31st August, 2026 (WAM) -- The Arab Media Summit Organising Committee announced that the Ministers of Information from Egypt, Syria, Bahrain, Jordan and Lebanon will participate in this year’s Summit, joining senior regional and international figures to discuss the future of the media industry.Scheduled to take place from 15-17 September 2026, the Summit will be held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and under the directives of H.H. UAE sends second aircraft of urgent relief for flood, landslide victims in Nepal

KATHMANDU, 31st August, 2026 (WAM) — The second UAE relief aircraft, operated through the UAE Aid Agency, arrived in the Republic of Nepal carrying 45 tonnes of relief supplies for people affected by floods and landslides.
