Over 900 dead, 4,200 missing as Nepal floods spur massive UN-led relief effort

NEW YORK, 1st September, 2026 (WAM) -- More than 20,000 search-and-rescue personnel have deployed to flood-impacted areas across Nepal following torrential rains that devastated 15 municipalities and two disaster zones, according to UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric.Nepali authorities have recorded 903 fatalities, over 267 injuries, and more than 4,200 missing persons, while emergency teams have successfully rescued over 10,000 individuals, including 252 foreign nationals.Humanitarian relief operations are accelerating despite severe access constraints, particularly along key transport routes like the Prithvi Highway, as teams work to restore basic services in Rasuwa, the hardest-hit district.OCHA and its partners have established a primary coordination hub in Nuwakot, deploying 11 emergency medical teams, delivering psychological first aid to roughly 400 residents, and distributing more than 3,200 dignity kits to vulnerable women and girls. To counter acute food insecurity, WFP dispatched 80 metric tonnes of food assistance to sustain 9,200 people for 15 days, while UNICEF delivered ready-to-use therapeutic food targeting 500 children suffering from severe acute malnutrition. The UN estimates that approximately 65,000 people require immediate water, sanitation, and hygiene support, while over 22,000 children need critical protection services, including 2,600 infants at risk of severe wasting.Supplemental nutrition is urgently required for 10,500 pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, and more than 10,000 school-aged children need psychosocial care, with authorities tracking 107 children separated from their families. Infrastructure losses include 19 damaged schools—nine completely destroyed—with eight facilities currently serving as emergency shelters for displaced residents.

Iceland's EU referendum: first partial results show razor-thin margin

REYKJAVIK, 30th August, 2026 (WAM) -- Icelanders voted today on whether to resume their EU accession bid or shelve the prospect of joining the bloc for the foreseeable future.Polling stations are open from 9am to 10pm local time, with voters deciding whether to return to membership negotiations or reject even exploring what a deal would look like.Iceland's EU referendum is on a knife-edge, with the 'Yes' camp at 51.2% and the 'No' at 48.8%. 40% of the votes have already been scrutinised. The partial results show a neck-to-neck race with the 'Yes' at 51.2% and the 'No' at 48.8%, with over 87,000 votes scrutinised.Iceland applied for EU membership following the 2009 financial crisis, but froze the talks after the election of a Eurosceptic government in 2013.RÚV, Iceland's public broadcaster, reported on Saturday that voter turnout in Reykjavik was stronger than for the nation's 2024 parliamentary elections as of 11am local time, with just over 8% having voted compared to 5% at the same time in the 2024 voting.

Heat-related deaths exceed 25,000 across four European countries

BRUSSELS, 28th August, 2026 (WAM) -- Severe heatwaves in 2026 have been linked to more than 25,000 deaths in Germany, France, Spain and Italy, amid warnings that the toll could rise further during August and September, two of the summer months most associated with heat-related mortality, according to the latest national health data.Germany recorded the highest toll, with around 14,000 deaths linked to extreme heat since the beginning of the year, according to data from the Robert Koch Institute. The figure exceeds the total recorded in any full year since 2016.In France, the public health agency recorded more than 7,300 additional deaths linked to heatwaves since the beginning of the year, while Spain reported around 4,500 heat-related deaths between 1st June and 19th August, the highest figure for the period since 2022, according to the Carlos III Health Institute. In Italy, final national mortality data are not yet available, as the monitoring system relies on partial and real-time indicators. The latest figures showed a three percent increase in deaths among people aged over 65 in June. The figures come amid repeated heatwaves that pushed temperatures above 35°C across large parts of Europe, with some areas recording temperatures of around 40°C, placing additional pressure on healthcare systems.Estimates of heat-related mortality do not necessarily mean that heat was recorded as the direct cause of death in every case. Health authorities in several European countries rely on excess mortality measurements compared with historical expectations, while estimating the extent to which high temperatures contributed to the increase.Older people and those with chronic illnesses are among the groups most vulnerable to the effects of extreme heat, which can also exacerbate cardiovascular and respiratory diseases and other health conditions. The current figures indicate that summer 2026 is posing a growing challenge to public health systems across Europe, while health authorities warn that the final toll could rise during August and September if high temperatures persist.
