AMMAN, 2nd September, 2026 (WAM) -- The Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army (JAF) spokesperson announced that Jordan, over the past several hours, was targeted by a missile attack that originated from Iranian territory.The spokesperson said Jordanian air defence systems dealt with 13 ballistic missiles that entered the Kingdom’s airspace, intercepting and destroying 10 of them successfully, while three missiles fell in remote areas far from populated centres.In a statement carried by Jordan News Agency (Petra), the spokesperson noted that the response to the attack was carried out in accordance with established operational procedures, and that no injuries or loss of life was reported. Meanwhile, specialised teams have been dispatched to areas where missile debris had fallen in order to take the necessary measures to ensure public safety.The Jordan Armed Forces stressed that its units and formations continue to carry out their duties around the clock, and that surveillance and air defence systems remain on high alert and readiness to respond to any threat, in order to safeguard the Kingdom’s security, the safety of its citizens, and the sovereignty of its airspace.

NEW YORK, 1st September, 2026 (WAM) -- Tom Fletcher, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, has warned that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is spreading at an unprecedented pace, calling for urgent international action and funding before it spirals out of control.Speaking during a virtual briefing to UN Member States on Tuesday, Fletcher described the outbreak as the fastest-growing Ebola epidemic on record.He said the virus was spreading in a country already facing a profound humanitarian crisis, with nearly 11 million people in need of assistance amid conflict-driven displacement, acute food insecurity and widespread malnutrition.The outbreak has reached six provinces, including areas where violence and insecurity are restricting humanitarian access. Weak local health systems are further complicating efforts to detect cases, trace contacts, treat patients and build trust with affected communities.Fletcher stressed that the international response must be urgently expanded to keep pace with the accelerating spread of the virus.The United Nations has strengthened its response since activating its emergency mechanism on 9th June, including establishing operational humanitarian hubs in Bunia and Beni.Fletcher also highlighted the severe risks facing frontline responders. More than 40 healthcare workers have died from Ebola while trying to save others, while treatment centres and ambulances have come under attack.“These front-line responders must be protected,” he said.The revised 2026 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan for the Democratic Republic of the Congo requires US$2.1 billion, including $300 million for Ebola-related activities.Fletcher urged the international community to keep the crisis high on the global agenda, ensure safe and rapid humanitarian access and provide increased, flexible funding for both the Ebola response and the wider humanitarian operation.“Time is not on our side,” he warned. “We have beaten Ebola before. And we can do it again.”

NEW YORK, 1st September, 2026 (WAM) -- More than 20,000 search-and-rescue personnel have deployed to flood-impacted areas across Nepal following torrential rains that devastated 15 municipalities and two disaster zones, according to UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric.Nepali authorities have recorded 903 fatalities, over 267 injuries, and more than 4,200 missing persons, while emergency teams have successfully rescued over 10,000 individuals, including 252 foreign nationals.Humanitarian relief operations are accelerating despite severe access constraints, particularly along key transport routes like the Prithvi Highway, as teams work to restore basic services in Rasuwa, the hardest-hit district.OCHA and its partners have established a primary coordination hub in Nuwakot, deploying 11 emergency medical teams, delivering psychological first aid to roughly 400 residents, and distributing more than 3,200 dignity kits to vulnerable women and girls.To counter acute food insecurity, WFP dispatched 80 metric tonnes of food assistance to sustain 9,200 people for 15 days, while UNICEF delivered ready-to-use therapeutic food targeting 500 children suffering from severe acute malnutrition.The UN estimates that approximately 65,000 people require immediate water, sanitation, and hygiene support, while over 22,000 children need critical protection services, including 2,600 infants at risk of severe wasting.Supplemental nutrition is urgently required for 10,500 pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, and more than 10,000 school-aged children need psychosocial care, with authorities tracking 107 children separated from their families. Infrastructure losses include 19 damaged schools—nine completely destroyed—with eight facilities currently serving as emergency shelters for displaced residents.

NICOSIA, 31st August, 2026 (WAM) -- At least eight people died and 18 were missing after a ferry carrying around 270 passengers and crew capsized off North Cyprus on Sunday, leaving survivors clinging to its overturned hull.The privately owned ferry left the port of Kyrenia at 12:30 pm local time and immediately started taking on water for an unknown reason, authorities said. It was heading for the Turkish port of Tasucu in the eastern Mediterranean.Survivors reported the ferry moving erratically, with its last hard impact with the water's surface breaking the bow of the two-hulled vessel, allowing water to seep in. The boat was carrying 267 people, including a crew of eight, while 241 people were rescued.The disaster occurred just off the coast of Kyrenia, a popular holiday resort for both locals and tourists.
