CAIRO, March 25, 2026 (WAM) -- DP World has enhanced its capacity at the Jeddah Islamic Port terminal by adding three new semi-automated quay cranes, enabling more efficient handling of the world's largest container ships. This latest capacity expansion strengthens the terminal's ability to maintain reliable trade flows amid ongoing maritime security challenges in the Red Sea, coinciding with a resurgence in maritime transport. Each of the new cranes has a lifting capacity of 65 tons, increasing quay efficiency and allowing the terminal to service multiple mainline vessels simultaneously, supporting Saudi Arabia's aspirations to be a leading global logistics hub. Built by ZPMC and currently in the commissioning phase, the cranes will join the terminal's existing fleet, raising the total number of ship-to-shore cranes from 14 to 17, with plans to reach 22 in future capacity expansions. DP World’s South Container Terminal features a total quay length of 2,150 meters and a deep-water berth with a depth of 18 meters, capable of accommodating five ultra-large container ships at the same time. The terminal is equipped with modern processing equipment and advanced automation technologies to enhance turnaround times and operational efficiency. The new cranes are part of an $800 million modernization program that will increase terminal capacity from 1.8 million TEUs to 4 million TEUs. This investment lays the groundwork for a future capacity of 5 million TEUs, with additional ship-to-shore equipment to be deployed as demand increases. DP World KSA CEO Mohammad Alshaikh stated, “By increasing capacity and enhancing operational agility, we are helping our customers transport their goods more efficiently and strengthening the terminal’s ability to accommodate larger vessels and increasing container volumes. While recent regional developments have posed new challenges, we are working closely with port authorities, security partners, and shipping customers to ensure the continuity of trade in the Red Sea and beyond.” In 2025, DP World Jeddah processed over 1.3 million TEUs, more than doubling the volumes of the previous year, facilitated by the return of shipping lines to the Red Sea corridor and an increase in weekly services to 38. DP World has also bolstered its presence in cargo transportation by strengthening land connectivity and expanding access to end-to-end supply chain solutions across the Kingdom. (Source: WAM.ae)
