‘Emirati Pioneers’: A gateway to understanding transformations that shaped Emirati achievements

ABU DHABI, 6th September, 2026 (WAM) -- The 35th edition of the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair (ADIBF 2026) will introduce the ‘Emirati Pioneers’ initiative, an annual national project dedicated to documenting the pioneering experiences of leading figures in culture and thought in the United Arab Emirates. The initiative seeks to transform their individual contributions and influence into documented knowledge and enduring cultural content, thereby reinforcing the collective national memory, preserving Emirati cultural achievements, and making them accessible to future generations. The initiative forms part of the broader vision of the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre (ALC), the Fair’s organiser, to build a cultural ecosystem that does not only produce and disseminate knowledge, but also preserves it, makes it available, and extends its reach. These objectives align with the role that the ADIBF’s has established role of by providing a space for local, regional and global dialogue and knowledge exchange.‘Emirati Pioneers’ is founded on a core conviction: that major cultural transformations cannot be read through institutions and achievements alone, but through the lives of those who helped bring it about, the circumstances in which their journeys took shape, the ideas they carried forward, the initiatives they launched, and the impact they left on society. Accordingly, the initiative seeks to move cultural biography beyond celebration into documentation, beyond commemoration into knowledge, and beyond individual experience into collective memory.Through this initiative, the Fair aims to build an accumulating narrative of the Emirati cultural scene, revisiting the journeys of figures who have had an influential presence in literature, media, thought, art, and cultural and institutional work. It places their experiences within the context of the transformations witnessed by the UAE since the establishment of the Union in 1971, allowing the development of Emirati cultural life to be read through its human, institutional, and intellectual trajectories. The initiative goes beyond the traditional notion of honouring cultural figures. It is based on the production of knowledge capable of enduring and circulating. To that end, it draws on documentation, publishing, and dialogue as interconnected tools to recover these experiences through knowledge materials, personal testimonies, specialised sessions, documentary publications, and visual works. This gives Fair visitors, particularly younger generations, access to multiple sources that reflecting on each experience from different angles. This direction reflects a shift in the very function of the book fair itself. In keeping with its vision, the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair serves as a platform for the publishing industry strengthening communication among publishers, authors, and intellectuals; and providing a space to exchange ideas, build partnerships, and explore developments in the sector. It also plays a part in promoting reading, disseminating knowledge, and encouraging dialogue among nations. Seen in this light, ‘Emirati Pioneers’ adds a dimension of national documentation to this function, turning the Fair into a space where knowledge is produced, preserved, and reintroduced. The initiative also reflects the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre’s commitment to opening new avenues for advancing cultural activity. In recent years, the Centre has expanded its projects to include translation, publishing, research and studies, awards, and reading programmes, alongside initiatives aimed at younger generations that encourage reading, writing, and creativity. In this context, ‘Emirati Pioneers’ becomes a natural extension of this trajectory, while adding an element connected to national cultural memory. It views individual experiences as part of the stages through which modern Emirati culture has taken shape.Furthermore, the initiative carries an important dimension related to the transfer of experience between generations. Documenting the journey of a cultural figure, writer, media professional, or institution builder reveals paths of formation, work, and experience, while offering new generations models they can read, draw inspiration from, and build upon. By doing so, the initiative turns cultural biography into learning material, a source for research, and a gateway to understanding the transformations that shaped the Emirati scene. The ‘Emirati Pioneers’ initiative gains further significance as an annual, cumulative project. Each edition adds a name, an experience, and a new layer to the record of Emirati culture, gradually building a multi-generational knowledge map that traces the transformations of literature, media, art, and cultural and intellectual institutions in the UAE.In this sense, it does not seek to retrieve the past merely to celebrate it, but to repurpose it as a reference for shaping the future. When biography becomes a book, testimony becomes a document, and individual experience becomes material available to researchers and readers, cultural heritage becomes a living part of society, rather than merely a record preserved in memory. This approach strengthens the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair’s role as a platform for producing the narratives of Emirati culture, documenting its leading figures, showcasing its achievements, and presenting its experiences to local, Arab, and international audiences.

Emirati women advance future vision through artificial intelligence

ABU DHABI, 6th September, 2026 (WAM) -- As artificial intelligence continues to advance at an accelerating pace, Emirati women's participation in science and technology is no longer simply a notable presence, but an active contribution to knowledge creation and shaping the future, supported by a national ecosystem that has made education, scientific research and innovation key pillars of development.Among the Emirati figures who have chosen scientific research as both a career and an intellectual passion is Dr Hanan Aldarmaki, Director for Center of Teaching and Learning, and Assistant Professor of Natural Language Processing at Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), whose journey combines advanced academic achievement, research and contributions to the development of artificial intelligence technologies.Speaking to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), Aldarmaki said Emirati women today, thanks to the support of the UAE leadership, have access to numerous opportunities to pursue advanced education and build careers in scientific research and artificial intelligence within the country, noting the growing interest among Emirati students in this path. Her own journey reflects this support. Aldarmaki completed postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom and the United States before returning to the UAE with the expertise she had gained to build a career in research and teaching and help make this path more visible and accessible to Emirati students aspiring to enter the field. She holds a PhD in Computer Science from George Washington University and an MPhil from the University of Cambridge. When she joined MBZUAI in 2022, Aldarmaki became the first woman and first Emirati to join the university's faculty. She continues today to conduct research, teach and supervise the next generation of AI researchers, alongside leading the university's Center of Teaching and Learning. The growing presence of Emirati women in the field is also reflected in the university's 2026-2027 academic cohort, in which female students account for 54 percent of Emirati students.Aldarmaki said the achievements of Emirati women today are the result of decades of support and forward-looking leadership that recognised the importance of empowering women and strengthening their participation across different sectors. Her role as an Emirati AI researcher also carries a responsibility linked to identity, language and culture. As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into systems and applications, she said accurate representation of cultures, values and languages becomes ever more important.Aldarmaki said her work gives her an opportunity to contribute to the representation of her language and society in this rapidly evolving field. A significant part of her research focuses on natural language and speech processing for Arabic and low-resource languages and dialects. This field presents genuine scientific challenges because of the wide diversity of Arabic dialects. Spoken Arabic in the UAE also takes different forms, making the identification of these nuances a central part of her work through Ramsa Lab, a national initiative dedicated to documenting spoken Emirati dialects across the country.Aldarmaki explained that the work extends beyond documenting language. Much of the UAE's intangible heritage is transmitted orally, meaning that documenting spoken language also preserves a wide range of cultural values and practices, while providing the resources and foundations needed to develop language technologies that more accurately represent Emirati language and culture. She noted that MBZUAI provides multiple opportunities for Emiratis at different stages of education and professional development, from undergraduate AI programmes to master's and doctoral studies, where students can conduct advanced research and collaborate with different sectors. As part of expanding these opportunities, the university recently launched the Ruwwad AI Scholars (RAIS) Postdoctoral Fellowship, which offers Emirati researchers who have completed their PhDs a fully funded opportunity to undertake two years of postdoctoral research at leading research institutions worldwide, helping prepare a new generation of Emirati faculty members and research leaders.Marking Emirati Women's Day, Aldarmaki addressed girls aspiring to become scientists and researchers in artificial intelligence, urging them to recognise that their knowledge and intellectual capabilities are among their most valuable assets. She encouraged them to continue learning and build a deep understanding of the fields in which they study and work, noting that mastering the language and concepts of a technical field not only enables women to participate in it, but also gives them the ability to help shape its direction and influence its development.Aldarmaki stressed that technology, including artificial intelligence, is not an end in itself, but a tool to serve people and enhance human prosperity, adding that the shared responsibility is to harness it to build a sustainable and prosperous future.

UAE building integrated, data-driven air quality system: Minister of Climate Change

DUBAI, 6th September, 2026 (WAM) -- Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, affirmed that the UAE joins the international community in marking the seventh International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies and in calling for stronger cooperation and practical solutions that improve air quality while advancing climate action and economic resilience.“This year’s International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies will focus on the fact that clean air is not only an environmental objective, but an investment in the community, stronger economy and shared prosperity. Air pollution and climate change are caused by the same sources, and integrated action gives us an opportunity to deliver benefits across climate and sustainable development.”“In the UAE, enhancing air quality is a strategic national priority. Guided by our leadership’s vision, the National Air Quality Agenda 2031 provides a clear framework for aligning federal and local government entities and the private sector around three pillars, monitoring, mitigation and management with the aim of ensuring the well-being of the community. It addresses outdoor and indoor air quality, ambient odour and ambient noise, supported by federal environmental legislation and regulatory requirements that strengthen the prevention, control and management of emissions.”She added, “Turning policy into measurable action requires reliable, accessible and well-integrated data. The UAE’s National Air Quality Platform provides a real-time overview of air quality conditions across the country. Complementing this, the Ministry has operationalised a centralised digital dashboard for the collection and management of air-quality monitoring data from local environmental authorities. The dashboard replaces the previous reliance on fragmented submissions with a standardised national digital workflow that supports data quality assurance, analysis and national reporting. This strengthens data integration and cooperation between the federal and emirate levels and enables air-quality information to be translated more efficiently into evidence-based policy and targeted action for enhancing the quality of life.”“The Ministry has also completed the development of an integrated national emissions Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) system that incorporates priority air pollutants alongside greenhouse gas emissions. The system establishes a consistent digital pathway for collecting, reporting, verifying and analysing facility-level emissions information, while supporting the development and improvement of national emissions inventories. By bringing air pollutants and greenhouse gases within an integrated emissions-management framework, the MRV system strengthens the evidence base for identifying emission sources, tracking performance and directing mitigation measures where they can deliver the greatest benefits for air quality and climate action.”“At the same time, work is progressing on national air-quality forecasting and early-warning capabilities. By combining monitoring observations, meteorological information and analytical tools, the UAE is strengthening its ability to move from understanding current conditions to anticipating potential pollution episodes and supporting earlier, more targeted responses. This proactive direction, together with stronger emissions inventories and scientific assessment of pollution sources, is central to future-ready air-quality management.”“Together, these initiatives represent an important shift from isolated monitoring to a connected national cycle of measuring, understanding, managing and anticipating air-quality risks. Clean air is fundamental to quality of life and a resilient, competitive economy. The UAE will continue to work with federal and local authorities, the private sector, academia and international partners to accelerate practical solutions and help ensure cleaner air and blue skies for present and future generations.”The International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies is observed annually on September 7 to raise public awareness and promote actions to improve air quality.

The scope of collaboration between the two parties subsequently expanded over the years, evolving in line with the system’s development and operational and technological requirements. The renewal of the contract reflects Salik’s ongoing commitment to investing in technology, artificial intelligence and innovation, while strengthening strategic partnerships that support the growth of its core business and the expansion of its mobility services. This approach supports the continued advancement of Dubai’s tolling system, the development of integrated payment solutions, and Salik’s ability to keep pace with Dubai’s growth and evolving mobility needs, further reinforcing its role within the emirate’s smart mobility ecosystem.
