UAE sends 83 tonnes of urgent relief aid for flood, landslide victims in Nepal

ABU DHABI, 30th August, 2026 (WAM) -- The United Arab Emirates, through the UAE Aid Agency, has sent an aircraft carrying urgent relief aid, consisting of 83 tonnes of food supplies and various shelter and humanitarian essentials, to the friendly Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal.The aid will support those affected by the floods and landslides that have struck various parts of Nepal in recent days, resulting in the deaths, injuries, and disappearance of dozens of people and causing extensive damage.The urgent assistance comes in implementation of the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to allocate US$10 million to provide relief to those affected, in a manner that supports early recovery and stability, while ensuring the provision of essential supplies and basic necessities for people of all age groups during such difficult and emergency circumstances.The UAE Aid Agency, in cooperation with the UAE Embassy in Nepal, is coordinating with local authorities to ensure the rapid delivery of the various relief supplies to those in need. The agency is also continuing to coordinate with relevant international organisations to strengthen and consolidate relief efforts in the affected areas.

Nepal-Tibet floods death toll hit 750, over 3,000 missing

GYIRONG, KATHMANDU, 30th August, 2026 (WAM) -- The death toll in Nepal and Tibet from last week's catastrophic floods hit 750 on Sunday with 3,044 missing, authorities said, while rescuers moved ​to higher ground as rain swelled river levels.Deaths in Nepal have risen to 734, with 2,498 missing and 7,514 rescued, the nation's disaster authority said. In China, 16 ​people had died in Gyirong County as of Saturday evening and 546 were missing, officials in Tibet told a press conference.Among the 261 foreign nationals from 23 countries missing on the Tibetan side were 104 from Nepal, 49 from neighbouring India, as well as 33 Latvians, 18 Americans and 15 Britons, they said in China's first breakdown by ​nationality.Beijing and Kathmandu are working together to identify missing citizens and foreign nationals, as well as strengthening cooperation in disaster prevention and mitigation, and ​climate-change response, CCTV said.

Al Tayer reviews pioneering projects at DEWA’s Distribution Power complex in Al Ruwayyah

DUBAI, 30th August, 2026 (WAM) -- Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), toured the Distribution Power division’s complex in Al Ruwayyah to review a range of innovative projects and initiatives enhancing the reliability, efficiency and sustainability of Dubai’s electricity distribution network. Al Tayer was accompanied by Rashid Bin Humaidan, Executive Vice President of Distribution Power, and senior DEWA staff.The tour showcased a wide spectrum of cutting-edge technologies and solutions reshaping Distribution Power’s operations, ranging from artificial intelligence-powered asset management and accredited laboratory services to groundbreaking inspection techniques. Together, these initiatives underscore DEWA’s commitment to operational excellence and reinforce its position as a global leader in smart grid innovation.Al Tayer emphasised that DEWA’s continuous investment in research and development, coupled with a deep commitment to fostering creativity among employees, has resulted in pioneering solutions that significantly enhance the resilience of Dubai’s power network. He noted that these innovations embody a proactive approach to critical asset management by leveraging Big Data and advanced analytics to support strategic decision-making while improving both maintenance protocols and overall operational efficiency.Among the key projects reviewed was the Asset Health Centre, which uses real-time data on asset condition, risk and maintenance requirements to support faster and more informed decision-making. The centre enables risk-based maintenance planning, optimises replacement timing and reduces asset-related risks.Al Tayer was briefed on DEWA’s Distribution Automation programme that strengthens network reliability through RF-Mesh technology, which enables remote monitoring and control from Distribution Control Centres, supporting DEWA’s Smart Grid and enhances the reliability of services.He also inspected DEWA’s accredited laboratories, which continue to deliver significant technical and financial benefits. These include the ISO/IEC 17025:2017-accredited Cable Lab, which supports root-cause analysis, quality assurance, lifecycle management and external cable testing, while generating significant revenue and savings. Al Tayer also visited the Energy Meter Testing Lab, which conducts accredited testing of energy meters and current transformers and has generated significant revenue.DEWA is the first utility worldwide to use X-ray inspection to examine capacitor bank circuit breakers without affecting their functionality or causing damage, helping to detect internal defects at an early stage and minimise service interruptions.The visit concluded with a review of the Mobile Training Unit, which delivers safety and operational training directly to field teams. Between 2021 and 2025, the unit trained more than 9,200 employees.

Zayed Authority for People of Determination welcomes 2,121 students as 2026/2027 academic year begins

ABU DHABI, 30th August, 2026 (WAM) -- Zayed Authority for People of Determination welcomes its students as the new 2026/2027 academic year begins across its various care and rehabilitation centres throughout the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.A total of 2,121 students with different types of disabilities are enrolled within an integrated system encompassing education, rehabilitation, care and vocational training.In the Abu Dhabi region, the Authority’s network includes the Abu Dhabi Centre for Care and Rehabilitation, the Abu Dhabi Autism Centre, and the Agricultural and Vocational Rehabilitation Department for individuals aged over 16. In the Al Ain region, the network comprises the Al Ain, Al Quaa and Al Wagan Care and Rehabilitation Centers, the Al Ain Autism Centre, and the Agricultural and Vocational Rehabilitation Department for individuals aged over 16. In the Al Dhafra region, the network includes the Care and Rehabilitation Centers in Al Sila, Ghayathi, Al Mirfa, Delma and Madinat Zayed.The Authority has completed its preparations for the new academic year by finalising maintenance and development works and equipping educational and rehabilitation facilities and environments to meet students’ needs. It has also ensured the availability of specialized and qualified professionals to provide integrated services in special education, rehabilitation, therapy and vocational training.Under the supervision and follow-up of H.H. Sheikh Khalid bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Authority, the new phase at the Zayed Authority for People of Determination continues to advance the education and rehabilitation system through the introduction of modern curricula, artificial intelligence solutions and assistive technologies. Individualized plans and programmers are also being implemented to address the needs and capabilities of each student.This integrated system aims to enhance students’ skills and independence, develop their educational, life and vocational capabilities, and prepare them for greater integration and active participation in society, in line with leading global practices and trends in the field of People of Determination.The Authority affirmed that the ongoing development of services for People of Determination is underpinned by the continuous support of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and the continued follow-up of H.H. Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, strengthening the Emirate’s efforts to build an advanced and sustainable system for empowering People of Determination.Abdullah Abdul Al Humaidan, Secretary-General of Zayed Authority for People of Determination, said, “The beginning of the new academic year represents another milestone in the ongoing development of the education and rehabilitation system for People of Determination. NASA, SpaceX adjust Crew-13 launch date

WASHINGTON, 30th August, 2026 (WAM) -- NASA and SpaceX are adjusting the launch date for the agency’s Crew-13 mission to the International Space Station to address an oxidizer leak on Dragon’s propulsion system which was detected during standard prelaunch spacecraft processing.Joint NASA and SpaceX teams are performing additional tests and data review and will complete any necessary rework prior to launch. A new target date will be announced once available.NASA astronauts Jessica Watkins and Luke Delaney will serve as spacecraft commander and pilot, respectively. They will be joined by CSA (Canadian Space Agency) astronaut Joshua Kutryk and Roscosmos cosmonaut Sergey Teteryatnikov, who will serve as mission specialists.

FNRC, JSW Cement agree to expand building materials industry with new 1.65 MTPA grinding unit

FUJAIRAH, 30th August, 2026 (WAM) -- The Fujairah Natural Resources Corporation (FNRC) and JSW Cement signed a contract to establish and operate a new cement grinding unit in Al Tawyeen with an annual production capacity of 1.65 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). The expansion positions Fujairah as a major production hub for the region while aligning with critical shifts across the UAE's industrial landscapes.The project, which is expected to be implemented over a period of approximately 15 months, includes the establishment of a dedicated unit for the production of ordinary Portland cement, along with supporting utilities and infrastructure. The project will contribute to enhancing the production capacity of the building materials sector and supporting the growth of industrial investments in the Emirate of Fujairah.The project reflects the vision of H.H. Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Fujairah, and the follow-up of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al Sharqi, Crown Prince of Fujairah, to make optimal use of natural resources, expand the base of development projects, and strengthen the industrial sector in support of sustainable economic development in the emirate.Engineer Ali Qasim, Director General of the Fujairah Natural Resources Corporation, said that the signing of the contract represents an important step in supporting industrial investment in the Emirate of Fujairah. He noted that it reflects the Corporation’s commitment to attracting and enabling high-quality projects that generate added value for the local economy and adhere to the best environmental and technical practices, in line with the emirate’s efforts to maximize the utilization of its resources and develop its industrial sector.He said the expansion project represents a significant addition to the industrial sector, as it will enhance production capabilities and support the building materials market in the UAE and the wider region. He also highlighted the Fujairah Natural Resources Corporation’s continued efforts to support strategic projects that strike a balance between economic development and the preservation of natural resources, paving the way for a sustainable industrial future.GSW Cement expressed its appreciation for the support and cooperation provided by the Fujairah Natural Resources Corporation, affirming that the project will help meet growing market demand and enhance production efficiency through the utilization of locally produced clinker.The expansion project comes in response to growing demand for cement in the UAE and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, alongside urban growth and the expansion of infrastructure and construction projects. It will also contribute to improving supply chain efficiency and supporting the sustainability of the building materials sector.At the same time, the project strengthens the position of the Emirate of Fujairah as an attractive destination for industrial and mining investments. It supports the emirate’s efforts to expand development projects and maximize the utilization of available resources, thereby enhancing the competitiveness of the industrial sector and supporting sustainable economic growth at both the local and regional levels.
