ABU DHABI, March 10, 2026 (WAM) -- The Council of Arab League Ministers held an extraordinary session via video conference on March 8, 2026, under the presidency of the United Arab Emirates. The meeting addressed the targeting of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Arab states subjected to unprovoked attacks by Iran. It highlighted the Iranian assaults, which constitute a clear violation of international law and treaties, as well as the principles of good neighborliness, and raised serious risks threatening the security and stability of Arab states and the region. The Minister of State, Khalifa bin Shahin Al Marar, stated in his speech that Iran has been conducting "sneaky, cowardly, and unjust attacks against the Arab nations." Al Marar emphasized that, as stated in Decision No. 9241 adopted during the extraordinary session, the unprovoked Iranian attacks target the United Arab Emirates, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Kingdom of Bahrain, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the Sultanate of Oman, the State of Qatar, the State of Kuwait, and the Republic of Iraq. He expressed that these countries are not part of the ongoing armed conflict with Iran and are not involved in it. On the contrary, he noted that these countries have made significant efforts and mediation initiatives to prevent this dangerous situation that threatens regional security and stability. "These countries have also adhered to the policy of not allowing their territories, airspace, or waters to be used for any attacks against Iran," he said. Al Marar pointed out that Iran has ignored all these efforts and has continued to carry out horrific, cowardly, unjust, and indiscriminate attacks against Arab states since February 28. He stated that Iran targets commercial ports, airports, shopping centers, residential areas, service facilities, densely populated areas, and diplomatic and consular buildings indiscriminately using ballistic missiles and drones. He emphasized that these attacks have led to the deaths and injuries of many civilians and caused destruction at the targeted facilities. Al Marar declared that these ongoing Iranian attacks are a clear act of aggression, an unprovoked violation of national sovereignty, and a blatant violation of international law, the UN Charter, international humanitarian law, and the principles of good neighborliness. He also expressed that if the armed forces and air defense systems in the targeted countries are not vigilant, prepared, and effective, Iran's indiscriminate attacks could lead to major disasters. He appreciated and took pride in the efforts to protect the people, secure sovereignty, and confront unprovoked Iranian aggression. Al Marar highlighted that the aggression disrupts international air traffic and maritime navigation, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, jeopardizing maritime transport, the free movement of international trade, and energy security, which constitutes a clear violation of international law and threatens international peace and security. He reiterated that the United Arab Emirates is not a party to the armed conflict with Iran and has never been involved in this conflict, nor has it allowed its territories, airspace, or waters to be used for any attacks against Iran. In this context, he stressed that the Iranian attacks constitute an open and full-scale aggression against the UAE's sovereignty and territorial integrity, similarly representing a clear violation of the sovereignty of other targeted Arab states, the principles of good neighborliness, international law, the UN Charter, and international humanitarian law. Al Marar stated that all Arab states must firmly reject and condemn this aggression and hold Iran fully legally accountable for this aggression and its consequences under international law. He also emphasized that Arab states have the right to self-defense under international law and Article 51 of the UN Charter, and that the Arab League's Joint Defense and Economic Cooperation Agreement reaffirms the right of states to take all necessary measures to defend themselves and protect their territories, peoples, and residents. Al Marar called on the international community, particularly the United Nations Security Council, to assume the responsibility of condemning Iranian aggression. He urged the Council to adopt a binding resolution that compels Iran to immediately cease all attacks against Arab states, thereby maintaining its authority to preserve international peace and security. He also thanked all brotherly and friendly countries that strongly condemned the Iranian attacks and rejected such actions, noting that these actions constitute a violation of international law and pose a direct threat to the security and sovereignty of states. Al Marar called on the member states of the Arab League to support and adopt the draft resolution submitted by the Gulf Cooperation Council states to the United Nations Security Council. At the end of the meeting, a draft resolution titled "Targeting the Sovereignty and Territorial Integrity of Arab States Subjected to Iranian Attacks" was adopted. (Source: WAM.ae)
