As a psychologist and sociologist, I would like to note that the answer to this question allows us to understand not only psychological processes but also the dynamics of social structures.
Hot environments cause the body to expend extra energy to regulate its temperature, and this weakens individuals' capacity to maintain mental balance. As a result, impatience, irritability and mood swings occur more frequently.
This is linked to a concept known in psychology as the "heat aggression theory." According to this theory, extreme temperatures make emotional regulation more difficult and can intensify emotional reactions such as anger and aggression. These may manifest as increased arguments in traffic, tension in the workplace or impatience at home.
Yet the matter is not only individual. From a sociological perspective, these physical conditions also shape people's spatial behaviour. People who retreat into air-conditioned spaces withdraw from social interaction; public spaces empty out, and these enclosed, controlled environments in which we spend ever more time replace spontaneous encounters with planned appointments and social contact with digital connections, bringing psychological problems along with them. As each additional floor comes to mean more loneliness and less interaction, neighbourly relations and the sense of belonging grow weaker. This can be explained by the concept of "perceived social isolation" in psychology. In other words, even though individuals are physically close to one another, they drift apart emotionally and socially, and consequently the psychological flexibility of people living in countries where temperatures run above normal, such as Dubai, is affected accordingly.
To cope with these environmental stressors, individuals are advised to introduce small changes into their daily routines, set short-term goals and consciously increase their social contacts. Mindfulness practices that support emotion-regulation skills, and spending time in natural settings — especially direct contact with the earth — will be effective in maintaining mental balance and strengthening psychological resilience. All these strategies will enable individuals not only to cope with stress but also to feel more balanced, more at peace and, ultimately, happier.
