Norway’s King Harald dies at age 89
OSLO, 28th August, 2026 (WAM) -- Norwegian King Harald has died at the age of 89, the royal house said, making his son Haakon the new king of Norway.“King Harald passed away peacefully at Oslo University Hospital on Friday, 28th August, 0635 (local time, 0435 GMT),” the royal palace said on its website.Harald, who was Europe’s oldest living monarch, was taken to hospital on 17th August.
Typhoon Saudel makes landfall in China's Taizhou
BEIJING, 28th August, 2026 (WAM) -- Typhoon Saudel made landfall in Taizhou, in China's eastern Zhejiang province, at 8.05 am (0005 GMT), the national forecaster said on Friday.Authorities have issued a red alert for the typhoon, which they expect to lash Zhejiang and neighbouring Fujian province with heavy rainfall.
Death toll from flash floods in Nepal rises to 469
KATHMANDU, 28th August, 2026 (WAM) -- The death toll from massive flash floods has risen to 469 in Nepal, police said Friday, as rescuers work to find hundreds of people still missing in the area on the Nepal-China border.The previous death toll was 390 in Nepal and three in Tibet. Authorities had also reported more than 1,400 missing people in both areas from the disaster Wednesday.Hundreds have already been rescued, Nepalese authorities said, and dozens were receiving medical treatment in the capital, Kathmandu. Foreigners from multiple countries were among the missing.
Gold slips as Fed chief Warsh's Jackson Hole speech looms
World CAPITALS, 28th August, 2026 (WAM) -- Gold slipped on Friday as market participants awaited closely watched remarks from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh at the Jackson Hole symposium.Spot gold fell 0.5 percent to US$4,576.30 per ounce by 01:57 GMT after hitting a more than three-month high earlier this week following the US Treasury's announcement of support measures for long-duration bonds. US gold futures eased 0.8 percent to $4,629.00.Spot silver fell 1 percent to $68.54 per ounce and palladium declined 0.8 percent to $1,339.84. Platinum was down 0.6 percent at $1,834.83, on track for a weekly loss.
Dollar flat near one-week high
HONG KONG, 28th August, 2026 (WAM) -- The US dollar held flat near a one-week high against major peers on Friday.The dollar index, which measures the currency against six major peers, was little changed at 99.13 in early Asian trade.The euro and sterling were subdued near one-week lows against the greenback, last at $1.1652 and $1.3597, respectively, though both remained on track for a second straight monthly gain.The yen was little changed at 159.34 per dollar, but it was still headed for a 1.3 percent monthly rise.The Australian dollar was up nearly 0.1 percent to hit a three-month high of $0.72 as rate hike bets built up. The New Zealand dollar climbed 0.2 percent to $0.5960.The Canadian dollar held flat at $1.3844 and was heading for a second month of decline.In cryptocurrencies, bitcoin gained 0.5 percent to $80,620.33, on track for a nearly 30 percent gain in August that would be its biggest monthly gain since late 2024.
Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition 2026 opens
ABU DHABI, 28th August, 2026 (WAM) -- The Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition (ADIHEX) 2026 opened on Friday at ADNEC Centre Abu Dhabi and will run until 6th September.The exhibition is held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the Emirates Falconers’ Club.The 23rd edition is organised by ADNEC Group, a Modon company, in strategic partnership with the Emirates Falconers’ Club. This year, the exhibition has been extended to 10 days in response to strong public demand and the success of previous editions.For the first time, the exhibition will occupy the facilities of ADNEC Centre Abu Dhabi, offering visitors a more interactive experience.The exhibition is open daily from 10:00 to 22:00. Its largest edition to date features a record participation of companies and specialised brands across 15 sectors, showcasing the latest equipment, technologies and heritage experiences from around the world.The event also features more than 40 cultural and entertainment activities catering to visitors of all ages.

Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ajman, has said that Emirati Women's Day is a national occasion to celebrate the status achieved by Emirati women and their contributions through knowledge, work, and responsibility toward their families, society, and nation.He noted that this journey reflects the UAE's approach of believing in women's capabilities and providing them with opportunities to become key partners in development and shaping the future.The Ruler of Ajman said the theme of Emirati Women's Day 2026, "We Emerge Stronger and Better”, reflects a new phase that builds on past achievements and expands women's responsibilities to further strengthen their role in the nation's future.He added that the "Mother of the Nation 50:50 Vision" provides a strategic roadmap for the next 50 years, broadening the contributions of Emirati women and boosting their presence nationally, regionally, and internationally.Sheikh Humaid said that the success of Emirati women stems from an integrated ecosystem of families that nurture ambition and talent, institutions that recognise capability and provide opportunity, and a society that actively supports full participation.He also praised the historic role of H.H.
