Emirates Environmental Group launches Emirates Hospitality Sustainability Alliance

SHARJAH, 1st September, 2026 (WAM) -- The Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) officially launched the Emirates Hospitality Sustainability Alliance (EHSA) to advance environmental sustainability across the UAE’s hospitality sector through greater collaboration and measurable action.Launched at Coral Beach Resort Sharjah, the alliance brings together hospitality leaders, sustainability professionals, industry stakeholders and partners to exchange expertise and best practices, encourage innovation and address shared environmental priorities.The establishment of EHSA responds to the scale and complexity of today’s environmental challenges require greater collaboration, knowledge exchange and coordinated action across the industry.EHSA will focus on key sustainability challenges facing the hospitality industry, including energy and water consumption, waste and food waste, procurement, supply chains, resource efficiency and consumer behaviour.Dr Habiba Al Mar’ashi, Co-Founder and Chairperson of the EEG, said the alliance will connect existing sustainability efforts across the hospitality sector and provide a platform for collective action.“Sustainability cannot remain an aspiration or a collection of isolated initiatives. If we want to create meaningful change, we must be able to understand where we are, identify where improvement is required and measure the progress we make. EHSA has been established to create the collaborative environment needed to support this journey," she said. The alliance will also seek cooperation with government entities, suppliers, service providers, sustainability professionals, environmental organisations and academia, recognising the role of the wider hospitality ecosystem in driving environmental progress.“The true measure of what we launched today will not be the number of people who attended this gathering. It will be the partnerships that are created, the practices that improve, the resources that are conserved, the waste that is prevented and the measurable environmental improvements that follow," she said.She added, “The UAE hospitality sector is recognised globally for its ambition, innovation and pursuit of excellence. We now have an opportunity to ensure that environmental leadership becomes an equally defining characteristic."

Korea's August exports jump 68.7% to $98.25 billion

SEOUL, 1st September, 2026 (WAM) -- The Republic of Korea's exports surged 68.7 percent in August from a year earlier, buoyed by strong semiconductor shipments, data showed Tuesday.Outbound shipments came to US$98.25 billion in August, Yonhap News Agency reported, citing data from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources.Imports climbed 22.6 percent on-year to $63.51 billion, resulting in a trade surplus of $34.75 billion.By sector, semiconductor exports, a key pillar of Asia's fourth-largest economy, soared 209 percent during the period to $46.65 billion, as major technology companies known as hyperscalers stepped up spending on artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure.Semiconductor exports topped $40 billion for a third consecutive month.Exports of petroleum products jumped 65.3 percent to $6.84 billion, while those of petrochemical products rose 12.2 percent to $3.86 billion. Automobile exports, however, fell 29.8 percent to $3.85 billion.By destination, exports to China shot up 119.3 percent to $24.1 billion, driven by strong shipments of semiconductors and general machinery.Exports to the United States advanced a brisk 89.3 percent to $16.5 billion, mainly on triple-digit growth in shipments of semiconductors and computers.

China's PALLAS-1 rocket completes successful maiden flight

BEIJING, 1st September, 2026 (WAM) -- China on Tuesday successfully launched the PALLAS-1 Y1 carrier rocket into space from the Dongfeng commercial space innovation pilot zone in northwest China.The rocket blasted off at 10:00 am (Beijing Time) and performed normally throughout the flight, sending its payload into the designated orbit. All test objectives were met, and the mission was a complete success.The mission marked the maiden flight of PALLAS-1, a medium-sized, two-stage liquid carrier rocket.

Khalifa University, Abdulla Al Ghurair Foundation launch 'Alajdar' Employability Programme

ABU DHABI, 1st September, 2026 (WAM) -- Khalifa University of Science and Technology and the Abdulla Al Ghurair Foundation have launched the Alajdar Employability Programme to strengthen graduate employability and prepare future-ready talent for the UAE's evolving economy.Derived from the Arabic word meaning "the most qualified," the Alajdar is designed to help students build these capabilities throughout their university journey, enabling them to graduate with a world-class degree, workplace readiness and the confidence sought by today's employers.Developed over several months in partnership with the Abdulla Al Ghurair Foundation, the programme leveraged the expertise of experiential learning specialists to identify the key skills and attributes required by graduates, while considering the student journey.Beginning in September, students will take part in four orientation sessions designed to introduce the learning journey and the range of opportunities available throughout the academic year. Initially, the programme will be open only to Khalifa University students in their second, third, and fourth years.The programme complements students' academic studies through four integrated pathways covering professional development, career readiness, practical experience, and reflection. Together, these pathways will help students develop the professional competencies, workplace exposure and career confidence increasingly expected by employers, while encouraging continuous learning beyond the classroom.Upon successful completion of the programme, participants will receive the Alajdar Employability Certificate, together with academic and professional recommendations that strengthen their graduate profiles and support their transition into the workforce.The programme forms part of the ongoing efforts of Khalifa University and AGF to prepare students for the future by providing meaningful opportunities to gain practical experience and build successful career pathways.

Ministry of Interior launches school road safety campaign

ABU DHABI, 1st September, 2026 (WAM) -- The Ministry of Interior, through the Federal Traffic Council, has launched its fourth quarterly campaign of 2026 under the slogan “Safe Road for Our Students” to promote road safety during students’ journeys to and from school.Targeting students, parents, school bus drivers and supervisors, the campaign provides guidance on safe behaviour aboard school buses, boarding and disembarking procedures, and precautions around schools and residential areas.Campaign materials are available in Arabic, English, and Urdu. Its messages will also be shared across Facebook, X, and Instagram as part of a coordinated media plan developed with strategic partners and relevant traffic safety authorities.Students are advised to arrive at bus stops five minutes before the scheduled pickup time, remain calm during the journey and avoid distracting the driver. After leaving the bus, they should move at least 10 steps away to remain visible to the driver.Supervisors are responsible for assisting students when boarding and leaving buses, recording absences, notifying school authorities and monitoring behaviour during journeys.Parents are encouraged to accompany children to bus stops and arrange for an authorised person to receive them from the bus or at the school gate, while schools are urged to provide safe boarding and disembarking areas and maintain regular communication with parents.School bus drivers must inspect their vehicles daily, stop only in safe locations and remain stationary until students have finished boarding or disembarking. They must also ensure, in coordination with supervisors, that students are seated and wearing seat belts and activate the “Stop” sign when students are boarding or leaving the bus.Motorists travelling in both directions must come to a complete stop when a school bus “Stop” sign is activated.Under Article 91, motorists who fail to stop face a fine of AED1,000 and 10 traffic points, while Article 90 imposes a fine of AED500 and six traffic points on school bus drivers who fail to activate the sign.

Over 900 dead, 4,200 missing as Nepal floods spur massive UN-led relief effort

NEW YORK, 1st September, 2026 (WAM) -- More than 20,000 search-and-rescue personnel have deployed to flood-impacted areas across Nepal following torrential rains that devastated 15 municipalities and two disaster zones, according to UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric.Nepali authorities have recorded 903 fatalities, over 267 injuries, and more than 4,200 missing persons, while emergency teams have successfully rescued over 10,000 individuals, including 252 foreign nationals.Humanitarian relief operations are accelerating despite severe access constraints, particularly along key transport routes like the Prithvi Highway, as teams work to restore basic services in Rasuwa, the hardest-hit district.OCHA and its partners have established a primary coordination hub in Nuwakot, deploying 11 emergency medical teams, delivering psychological first aid to roughly 400 residents, and distributing more than 3,200 dignity kits to vulnerable women and girls.To counter acute food insecurity, WFP dispatched 80 metric tonnes of food assistance to sustain 9,200 people for 15 days, while UNICEF delivered ready-to-use therapeutic food targeting 500 children suffering from severe acute malnutrition.The UN estimates that approximately 65,000 people require immediate water, sanitation, and hygiene support, while over 22,000 children need critical protection services, including 2,600 infants at risk of severe wasting.Supplemental nutrition is urgently required for 10,500 pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, and more than 10,000 school-aged children need psychosocial care, with authorities tracking 107 children separated from their families. Infrastructure losses include 19 damaged schools—nine completely destroyed—with eight facilities currently serving as emergency shelters for displaced residents.
