Dubai Culture launches open call for participation in Arabic Typography Programme
DUBAI, 2nd September, 2026 (WAM) -- Dubai Culture has launched an open call for participation in the Arabic Typography Programme, organised in partnership with Visual Synonyms. The programme aims to open new creative horizons for talented practitioners in contemporary design, enabling them to explore the artistic potential of Arabic letterforms and reinterpret them through an educational experience that combines academic knowledge with practical application.Led by Dr Antoine Abi Aad, Associate Professor at the College of Arts and Creative Enterprises at Zayed University, the programme is aimed at working professionals with between three and ten years of experience, a solid working knowledge of Adobe Illustrator, and an ambition to advance their practice in Arabic typography.Applications will be open from 31 August to 20 September, and a committee comprising experts and artists will review them and select participants who meet the programme’s requirements. Applicants are required to submit their resumes with their applications, along with a creative portfolio of their key artworks and completed design projects. They must also commit to attending all programme sessions, which will take place for one month starting mid-October.The programme will feature a series of specialised masterclasses, mentorship sessions, interactive workshops and practical assignments, delivered either over two consecutive weeks or across five weekends. Participants will embark on a process of research and experimentation that begins with analysing the visual language of Japanese identity marks and culminates in the creation of contemporary typographic works rooted in Arabic letterforms and reimagined through modern design approaches.
Sheikh Sultan Award for Celebrating the Spirit of Youth opens registration for 7th cycle
SHARJAH, 2nd September, 2026 (WAM) -- Sheikh Sultan Award for Celebrating the Spirit of Youth, under the umbrella of the Rubu’ Qarn Foundation for Creating Future Leaders and Innovators, has officially launched its seventh cycle, continuing its mission to help youth discover their potential and develop their capabilities through meaningful experiences beyond the academic setting. Registration opened on 1 September to youth aged 13 to 18, including UAE citizens and residents of all nationalities, and will close on 1 May 2027.Sheikh Sultan Award for Celebrating the Spirit of Youth is the first of its kind in the region and aims to encourage youth to develop their skills and broaden their experiences across four categories: Adventure, Volunteering, Skills, and Fitness & Wellbeing. Through these categories, the Award encourages participants to challenge themselves while strengthening their self-confidence, perseverance, initiative and sense of social responsibility.The seventh cycle builds on the Award’s journey since its launch in 2019 by His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, in pursuit of a vision to nurture courageous youth who are unafraid to take on challenges, and a mission centred on recognising their potential and strengthening their capabilities and skills.Aziza Ibrahim Al Mazmi, Director of Sheikh Sultan Award for Celebrating the Spirit of Youth, said: “Through its seventh cycle, the Award continues to provide youth with a practical platform to discover their capabilities, challenge themselves, set clear goals and work towards achieving them. The value of this experience lies in the opportunities it offers participants to learn through practice and acquire skills and values that contribute to developing greater confidence, independence and responsibility, while strengthening their ability to respond with positivity, confidence and competence.”Al Mazmi added: “We look forward to enabling more youth across the UAE to benefit from the Award experience, with the support of families, schools, clubs, and youth and community organisations. These entities play an important role in creating an environment that encourages youth to take initiative, explore, develop themselves and participate actively in their communities.”The Award enables participants to progress through three levels, Bronze, Silver and Gold, each with defined requirements, giving them the opportunity to choose the pathway that best aligns with their capabilities and goals and to progress steadily through their Award journey.The Award’s categories provide an integrated experience built around the concept of discovering one’s passion, while supporting youth in developing their potential through diverse pathways. The Adventure category encourages participants to undertake new experiences that strengthen their planning, teamwork and sense of responsibility, while Volunteering promotes the values of giving, community service and active participation.The Skills category helps participants discover their passions, acquire new skills and hone their abilities in areas of their choice, while Fitness & Wellbeing encourages an active and balanced lifestyle, contributing to the holistic development of youth’s capabilities and character.Participation in the seventh cycle is subject to the Award’s approved terms and conditions, which set out the eligibility, registration and completion requirements for each level. Participants must be between 13 and 18 years of age as of 1 September and may not register for more than one medal during the same cycle.
Brent crude oil settles at $94.65 per barrel, reaching five-week high
NEW YORK, 2nd September, 2026 (WAM) -- Oil prices jumped more than $4 a barrel on Tuesday, settling at a five-week high, as traders feared more supply disruptions from the Middle East due to renewed fighting between the US and Iran.Brent futures rose $4.16, or 4.6%, to settle at $94.65 a barrel. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rose $4.46, or 5.2%, to settle at $90.22. That was the highest close for Brent since July 24 and for WTI since July 23.
US military completes latest strikes against Iran
WASHINGTON, 2nd September, 2026 (WAM) -- US forces resumed strikes against Iran on Tuesday, US Central Command (Centcom) said.Centcom said in a statement Tuesday evening that it had completed the latest barrage against Iranian military targets including air defence sites, radar systems and maritime assets.Centcom added that the strikes followed "recent attempted attacks" by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and "American service members deployed to the region".
Jordan Armed Forces dealt with 13 ballistic missiles launched from Iran
AMMAN, 2nd September, 2026 (WAM) -- The Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army (JAF) spokesperson announced that Jordan, over the past several hours, was targeted by a missile attack that originated from Iranian territory.The spokesperson said Jordanian air defence systems dealt with 13 ballistic missiles that entered the Kingdom’s airspace, intercepting and destroying 10 of them successfully, while three missiles fell in remote areas far from populated centres.In a statement carried by Jordan News Agency (Petra), the spokesperson noted that the response to the attack was carried out in accordance with established operational procedures, and that no injuries or loss of life was reported. Meanwhile, specialised teams have been dispatched to areas where missile debris had fallen in order to take the necessary measures to ensure public safety.The Jordan Armed Forces stressed that its units and formations continue to carry out their duties around the clock, and that surveillance and air defence systems remain on high alert and readiness to respond to any threat, in order to safeguard the Kingdom’s security, the safety of its citizens, and the sovereignty of its airspace.
Kuwait air defences respond to hostile Iranian missile, drone attacks
KUWAIT, 2nd September, 2026 (WAM) -- The General Staff of the Kuwaiti Armed Forces announced on Tuesday that its air defences are actively engaging with missile and drone threats amid the ongoing treacherous Iranian aggression.In a press statement, carried by Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), the General Staff stated that any sounds of explosions that may be heard are the result of ongoing interception operations of hostile missiles and drones.It urged the public to be calm and follow safety and security instructions issued by relevant authorities.
